East Asian Comics

East Asian comics, rich and satisfying in terms of content, are classified based on various parameters such as geography, culture, age, and gender. The main classifications are as follows:

Shonen Manga: Derived from the Japanese word “Shonen,” meaning boy, these mangas are geared towards boys. They are high in excitement, action, and adventure, featuring series like Naruto, Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Shoujo Manga: Derived from the Japanese word “Shoujo,” meaning young girl, these mangas often feature complex love stories, magical girl adventures, and other themes that appeal more to girls. Notable examples include Cardcaptor Sakura, Yona of the Dawn, and Kamisama Kiss.

Geographic Differences: Manga refers to Japanese comics. Korean comics are called Manhwa, and Chinese comics are called Manhua. There are also Seinen and Josei mangas, which are older and contain more mature content.

In Japan, mangas are published in weekly or monthly magazines. If a manga becomes popular enough, it may be compiled into books. For digital manhwa and manhua, chapters are uploaded weekly to webtoon platforms.

What is Manga?

Manga, Manhwa, and Manhua are three closely related terms. Manga is Japanese, Manhwa is Korean, and Manhua, believed to be the origin, is Chinese for “improvised drawings” or “comics.” Japanese comics, known as manga, have been produced in Japan since the late 18th century.

Drawn by anime artists, mangas are read from right to left and have more exaggerated drawings compared to anime to keep the reader more engaged. Our site contains the latest and highest quality Japanese comic series.

The American occupation of Japan between 1945 and 1952 significantly influenced Japanese comic culture. The cultural invasion brought European and American comics, deeply affecting the imaginations of Japanese manga artists (Mangaka). Over time, Japanese mangas became popular worldwide from the early 1980s.

What is Manhwa?

Manhwa refers to specifically detailed Korean comics. Koreans call these comics Manhwa, while others may refer to them as “Korean Manga” or “Korean Comics.”

Although similar to manga in terms of drawings and themes, manhwa features Korean cultural terms and reads from left to right, unlike traditional Japanese manga. Additionally, manhwa are often in color and have highly detailed drawings, especially noticeable in eye and clothing designs.

It’s worth noting that the Japanese introduced this culture to the Korean peninsula during their 35-year occupation (1910-1945). The Japanese soldiers who ordered manga from their homeland influenced Korean manga artists (Manhwaga), eventually leading to the creation of manhwa.

What is Webtoon?

Webtoon refers to South Korean digital comics published online. The term combines “web” and “cartoon.”

A distinctive feature of webtoons is that the panels are arranged in a single vertical column, making them easy to read on digital devices.

What is Manhua?

Manhua refers to comics specific to China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Believed to have risen in the 20th century with the advent of lithographic printing, manhua are created by Chinese comic artists known as Manhuajia. Like any art form, manhua reflect societal events and culture. Initially focusing on the Sino-Japanese War and heroism, manhua lost international popularity after the Chinese Revolution due to publishing bans but are now published on various platforms, including individual blogs of Manhuajia, QQ Comic, and Vcomic.
